Second Epilepsy Teaching Course
The second Epilepsy teaching course was held at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on 7th- 8th October 2017 . This event was organised by the Epilepsy Council of the Malaysian Society of Neurosciences (MSN) and was supported by the Global Campaign Task Force of the Commission on Asian and Oceanian Affairs (CAOA) for the lnternational League Against Epilepsy (ILAE). The course format was adapted from the ASEPA Summer School course and we were honoured to have Professor Ernest Somerville from Australia attend the course as the guest speaker and lead facilitator during the 2 days. Topics covered included differential diagnosis of epilepsy, classification of seizures and epilepsy, management of epilepsy in general and in special situations, as well as cultural aspects of epilepsy. A total of 93 participants, both from Malaysia as well as from regional ASEAN countries including lndonesia and Myanmar attended this 2 day course. The participants thoroughly enjoyed the course, stating in particular the interactive sessions and discussion with the speaker and facilitators as well as relevance of the topics discussed as strengths of the course. Some lucky participants even won Sneaker bars and Mars bars during the case discussions session! Overall, the course was a success, with 92% of participant finding the course definitely relevant to their education needs and 85% rating the course as excellent.
